Used Car Market

The prices dealers pay for cars and trucks at Manheim auctions climbed to all-time highs in September and will likely remain elevated through spring. Wholesale values rose 27% last month from September 2020, according to the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index, which tracks prices of cars and trucks sold at auctions. And, September is not likely to mark the peak for this year.

“Basically, the odds favor more increases between now and spring because we’re still in a very supply-constrained market in total, in both the wholesale market and the new-vehicle market,” Cox Automotive chief economist Jonathan Smoke said in a conference call last week. “With new-vehicle production still hampered by the chip shortage and with consumer demand relatively strong, wholesale values are expected to stay elevated well into next year

Jeep Cherokee Production Down the Remainder of October

The Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois that builds the Jeep Cherokee will be down for the rest of the month because of the ongoing chip shortage. The Belvidere plant, even before the chip shortage, grappled with downtime as the automaker sought to match Cherokee production with demand. Cherokee sales fell 20 percent through September.

“Stellantis continues to work closely with our suppliers to mitigate the manufacturing impacts caused by the various supply chain issues facing our industry,” the company said in a statement.

Nearly All GM Plants in the U.S. Will be Online Next Week

Nearly all of General Motors’ U.S. assembly plants will be running next week, as the automaker said production would restart at its two Lansing, Mich., factories.

Lansing Grand River Assembly will resume production Monday, ahead of schedule. Cadillac CT4 and CT5 production at the plant has been idle since May 10th, and Chevrolet Camaro production has been down since Sept. 13th because of the global microchip shortage.

Lansing Delta Township Assembly will also restart next week, as planned. It builds the Chevy Traverse and Buick Enclave crossovers. Production has been down since July 19th.

GM’s plants in Ramos Arizpe and San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and Ingersoll, Ontario, will remain down next week because of the chip crisis.

Ford Recalls 354,330 Crossovers

A global recall covers 228,297 Explorer, Lincoln Corsair and Lincoln Aviator crossovers from the 2020-21 model years equipped with 360-degree cameras. Ford said the video output of those cameras may fail, which could cause the rearview image to cut out and thus increase the risk of a backover accident or crash.

Ford is also recalling 126,033 Explorers from the 2011-13 model years. Ford said the vehicles might be equipped with a cross-axis ball joint replacement part that may seize up. The automaker said that could result in a fracture of the outboard section of the vehicle’s rear suspension toe link. The recalled vehicles were originally sold or are currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

GM Restarts Production on Colorado & Canyon

General Motors plans to restart production at its midsize pickup plant in Missouri next week, as planned, while seven other of the automaker’s plants in North America remain idle, in part because of the global microchip shortage.

GM President Mark Reuss said this week that he expects the chip supply to stabilize but at lower levels than the industry wants. “We’re going to see a stabilization to some extent before we see getting the volume we really need,” Reuss said at a conference hosted by the Detroit Regional Chamber on Mackinac Island in Michigan.
